Employer grants

Create a new or enhanced alternative commuting program and KGT will reimburse you! Check out the KGT grant program.


An incentive is a reward an employer provides to employees who utilize alternate commuting a minimum number of days per week or month. Incentives can be cash, gift cards, prizes, time off, lunch with the CEO, etc. KGT participants who log at least eight days of non-drive-alone travel on their KGT calendars are eligible for monthly drawings plus other regional promotions and incentives. As an employer, you can create your own incentives tracked by trip-logging through our KGT system – we’ll show you how!

 Employer subsidies

A commute subsidy is an employer-provided incentive to encourage employees to share the ride. Example subsidies include transit passes, vanpool fares, or bicycle commute costs. KGT grants are available for employers who would like to implement subsidies into their program and can also help you finance your incentive program. Don’t forget that there are tax benefits for providing employees with incentives and subsidies.


In 2009, seven regional transportation agencies introduced a new transportation pass program called ORCA—One Regional Card for All. ORCA, with smart card technology, will eventually replace the previous confusing mix of payment choices. ORCA includes products ideal for business, including an electronic voucher option. Marketing and events

Educating employees is critical to the success of your program. KGT can provide staff, training, and giveaways for your transportation events. We can help with templates for creating brochures and/or posters for use around your facility, as well as utilizing a commuter board where you can post current commute information. An employee transportation fair, wellness fair, new hire orientation, and other employee events can be excellent ways for employees to learn about alternative commuting options and the resources available, plus meet potential ride match candidates. Parking management

KGT can help you think through and implement creative ways to save parking and money. Parking management strategies are helpful when an employer’s parking demand exceeds their supply. It can also be an effective motivator for employees to utilize alternative commuting. Smart parking management is a great way to reward your employees and save parking for your customers.


Through the RideshareOnline system, KGT provides employees with a free and easy way to find others who are interested in sharing their commute in a carpool or vanpool. Just sign up and input your ridematch details.

On-site amenities

On-site amenities can eliminate employees’ need to run errands throughout the day, removing some of the common obstacles employees may see to alternative commuting. Common on-site amenities include ATM, food service, coffee bar, mail services, and laundry services.

Showers and lockers

Many employers offer employees on-site showers and lockers, which are popular among bicycle and walking commuters. Employees can shower or just freshen up after their bike or walk commute, and then store their personal belongings at work. KGT can help you research the cost to make these improvements, and can support you with matching grants.

Secure bike storage

Offering secure bicycle storage encourages employees to bike to work, knowing their bicycles will be safe throughout the day. Bike storage can include a bike locker, a bike rack, or a lockable fenced area just for bikes. Undercover bike storage, such as in a garage, is preferred among cyclists. KGT grants can get you started.

Company vehicles and bikes

By having a company fleet vehicle and bike for employees’ use during the day, you eliminate one barrier employees may have to alternative commuting. KGT grants can help you set up a fleet.


Don’t own a fleet of vehicles, but want to offer your employees the option of a company car? Consider zipcar, a membership-based car-sharing company providing automobile rental to its members, billable by the hour or day. For information about zipcar, visit

Guaranteed ride home

A guaranteed ride home program provides transportation for employees who rideshare, take the bus, bike, or walk to work and then need a ride during the day because of an emergency. Many drivers fear using alternative commuting options because they think they will be trapped at work if an emergency arises or they have to work overtime. A guaranteed ride home program ensures they will be able to get home. It takes the fear and anxiety out of using alternative commuting and provides increased commuting choices for employees. You can design your own program, with help from KGT staff, or contract with King County Metro.
